It's wonderful to see that there are people who are making the world a better place. We can all do small things, doing something nice for a friend or a stranger only takes a minute and can make a huge difference in someone's life.
Some good folks in Atlanta, GA believe it is. The idea or concept is called "NetWeaving" and they have declared April 26 – 30, 2010 to be Pay It Forward Week in Atlanta.

Isn't that beautiful and brilliant? What if we each "hosted" a meeting to introduce two people whom we, "the NetWeaver" believe would benefit from knowing each other, with their needs and interests in mind? This idea could spread all around the world and benefit so many people. Imagine if we did this once every month!
What we may not realize is that Mother's Day has been around for centuries but not always in the same form as it is celebrated today. Mothers are also honored in nearly every country and culture around the world.

The earliest written record of honoring mothers comes from the ancient Egyptians. In fact, their practice of paying homage to their goddess Isis may be the very beginnings of our current Mother's Day celebrations as Isis was considered to be the mother of the Pharaohs.

<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=exposthewatki-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B000PAOHD6&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0"> In more recent years, motherhood was honored on the fourth Sunday of the Lenten season. However, this was more of a celebration to honor the church, or Mother church, where the mothers were baptized. The practice included decorating the place of worship with flowers and other symbols such as jewels to beautify the buildings. By the 1600s there was a decree that established Mothering Day, the forerunner of our current Mother's Day.

Mother's Day actually began in the United States in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation. This was a call to mothers who had lost sons during the Civil War to come together and celebrate peace and motherhood. This holiday, however, was never embraced nationally. It wasn't until Anna M. Jarvis began the process in 1908 that the holiday took off and was eventually declared a national holiday in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson.
In Argentina, mothers are given dinners, poems, and gifts of appreciation. France began Mother's Day in 1945 and uses this day to give cakes shaped like flower bouquets, cards, and perfume. Mothers in India have special dinners prepared for them and receive telephone calls from their children. The Japanese celebrate Mother's Day by giving their mothers red carnations, scarves, and handbags.

Mexico celebrates Mother's Day on May 10 rather than the second Sunday of May. Traditionally they prepare a family brunch for mothers and celebrate with songs sung by family members. In the United Kingdom, moms are given flowers, cards and taken out for a special Mother's Day tea.

Mothers in the United States and Canada are shown thanks, appreciated and honored by their children giving them cards and gifts. They may be taken out for a special meal, be given flowers, or receive telephone calls from children who are far from home. Chocolate is another common Mother's Day gift and breakfast served and prepared by the children, with a little help is also a common tradition.

If it weren't for mothers, none of us would be here so it's nice to remember our moms once a year in a special way. And since people around the world honor their moms, isn't it a good idea to do the same for your own?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8527504563304165257.post-40125968676564393772009-08-18T16:46:00.000-07:002010-04-23T21:11:07.941-07:00Morals Teaching Children To Do The Right ThingMorality is the code of conduct in which one decides right from wrong. Raising a child with good morals, especially in today's world, isn't always easy. You may want to follow some of these tips to teach your child this important character trait.

Although morality is often defined in terms of religion, it is much more than a religious concept. Morals are also defined by society, philosophy and conscience. They are the center of how people make ethical decisions.

What can parents do to ensure their children learn morals? Here are some suggestions:

Know your own morals and values. Think about the things and people that are important to you. Use those as the basis for how you make decisions and as the starting point to determine the things you do.

Do the right thing, be a good moral role model. It's often said that when it comes to children, more is caught than taught! This means they'll watch what you do, how you act and react to situations, and how moral you are to learn morality. By being a good role model, they're more likely to follow your positive examples rather than ones you may not be proud of.

Live with integrity. You expect your children to be honest, so model honesty before them. You'll have a hard time convincing your child honesty is important if you tell someone a lie. This sends a mixed message to your children, and may make your child think honesty isn't as important as you say.

Respect others. Children may begin treating others the way they see you treat those in your life. If you're disrespectful your children may disrespectful.

Foster good feelings. Do what you can to help your child develop a sense of their own worth: a strong sense of self. By having self-esteem, your child won't have to get the approval of their peers. Instead, they will be able to make rational choices based on their values and self-worth.

Help your child learn to think for themselves, which will allow them to make wise decisions rather than depending on the influence of others to make them. With the various external influences today such as; peers, television, movies, and music. You really want your children to know how to think on their own.

Children and teens that learn to make their own decisions and stand on their own two feet are more likely to do the right thing. They may also stand up for the underdog if they see someone being mistreated. Having strong moral principles will help your child make the right decisions.

Ultimately, as the parent, you have the most influence on your children's moral development. Help them establish good self-esteem, to think for themselves, and model morality before them. They'll see how important morality is to you and will follow in your footsteps. Thus creating a caring community and making the world a better place.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8527504563304165257.post-81752605412054948652007-04-16T18:50:00.000-07:002007-04-17T18:00:19.548-07:00A PHOTO CONTEST TO CAPTURE EVERYDAY GOODNESSI recently discovered and joined Squidoo a very cool place I might add. Squidoo gives people a way to raise awareness and money for their favorite causes, painlessly and for free, just by building a web page or "lense" about any topic.

Millions of people volunteer in our communities every day. We adopt abandoned animals. We check in on elderly neighbors. We spend a few hours laying down carpet for a homeless shelter. We read to kids down at the school. We hold the door...

These moments of human kindness and generosity happen countless times a day. And when we notice them, and especially when we play a part, the good feeling that's generated isn't just powerful. It's down-right contagious.

Which is why VolunteerMatch and Squidoo.com are inviting you to share your favorite photos showing the impact of giving back. This is your chance to inspire others with images of every kindness and the spirit of volunteerism and community. And we want to hear the story that lies behind these images, too.

For two special photos, an image won't just be worth a thousand words, either. They'll be worth $1,000, for charity. That's right. If our online community here votes your photo into one of the top two slots, we'll give $1,000 to the nonprofit organization of your choice.

Learn more about Kindness in FocusUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8527504563304165257.post-23457409081904782362007-04-16T10:05:00.000-07:002010-04-23T21:15:12.771-07:00What Everyone Should Know About The Power of Thought.Do you believe that your thoughts have power? Be it meditation, prayer, or simply focused intention, the power of thought can change your attitude, emotions, your physical body, and even the physical world around us.

Wouldn't it be nice to have 10,000 people helping you?

I found this new website that is designed to help you focus your thoughts on what is important while maintaining a positive attitude through gratitude, inspiration, and helping others. 10,000 Thoughts is an online community of people helping each other get what they want most.

It doesn’t matter if you believe in the power of thought, the power of positive thinking, power of prayer, or simply the power of the internet to connect people – 10,000 Thoughts might be the place to help you fulfill your dreams and wishes.

Here is how it works; you write down what you want as an intention. Other members view and read your intention, then send their focused thoughts, positive energy, prayers, comments, and e-mails or take other actions to help your intention come to be.

When you submit an intention to 10,000 Thoughts, there is the opportunity for tens of thousands of people to read your intention and help you get what you want. Plus, the more you help others with their intentions, the greater number of people will read and help you with your intentions. Then all you need to do is enjoy the fact that all these people want to help you with your dreams!

Since it's free to join it might just be worth checking out 10,000 Thoughts and see if it makes a difference in your life.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8527504563304165257.post-64328903445287050692007-04-11T20:35:00.000-07:002008-12-11T16:50:33.375-08:00Wordless Wednesday - Are You Bored? What do you do to prevent boredom? Are we in the habit of complaining too much? Think of all the ways people express complaints, discontent, displeasure, or unhappiness. They complain, kick, plain, sound off, quetch, or kvetch, and show unhappiness or critical attitude; they grouch, grumble, scold, gripe, b1tch, grouse, crab, beef, squawk, bellyache, and holler. Oh, my! There is a time and place when it's appropriate to complain but it can almost always be done in a pleasant way!

What if we looked at everything with a more positive attitude, would it make a difference? Would we be happier, and would the people around us be happier?

A Complaint Free World has started a complaint-free movement and they are giving away bracelets to help people learn new habit by reminding them not to complain. It takes 21 days to create new neuro-pathways in our brain and new habits. So perhaps by stopping ourselves from complaining, gossiping and criticizing it is possible to shift our outlook onto only the positive.

Here are the suggested rules for using the bracelet:

1. Begin to wear the bracelet, on either wrist

2. When you catch yourself complaining, gossiping or criticizing (it’s ok, everyone does) move the bracelet to the other arm and begin again.

3. If you hear someone else who is wearing a bracelet complain, you may point out their need to switch the bracelet to the other arm; BUT if you’re going to do this, you must move your bracelet first!

4. Stay with it. It may take many months but when you reach 21 days you will find that your entire life is happier, more loving, more positive and more abundant.

It doesn't matter what your religion or personal beliefs are you have the power to create your life with positive intention. Could you go 21 days without complaining? I believe you can!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8527504563304165257.post-46575119754415242032007-03-10T14:20:00.000-08:002007-03-10T14:22:09.504-08:00Pay It ForwardPay it forward or paying it forward refers to repaying the good deeds one has received by doing good things for other unrelated people.

I did a bit of research and according to Wikipedia the idea of "paying it forward" appeared in a letter from Benjamin Franklin to Benjamin Webb, dated April 22, 1784. The phrase "pay it forward" as a moral philosophy appeared in Catherine Ryan Hyde's novel "Pay It Forward", which was also adapted into a movie of the same name. Science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein, used the phrase in "Between Planets," a book published in 1951, some 50 years before Ryan Hyde's novel.

I haven't read Ryan Hyde's book but I loved the movie. "Pay it Forward" is described as an obligation to do three good deeds for others in repayment of a good deed that one receives, and that such good deeds should be things that the person cannot accomplish on their own. The recipient of such acts of kindness is then expected to do three good deeds for others in repayment for the help they have received. In this way, the need to help each other can spread exponentially through society creating a social movement with the hopes of making the world a better place. In practice the philosophy of pay it forward has broadened relative to its literary roots, and now it incorporates a more general flavor of social responsibility and desire to help others in recognition of the help one has received for one's self. It is also sometimes described as being "good for a favor", meaning a willingness to help others, even strangers, on the expectation that it will all come back around in the end.

The idea of the book has been championed in real life by the Pay It Forward Foundation . The Foundation focuses on bringing the idea of paying it forward to school age children, parents, and educators. The simple idea of doing good works for others to repay the good that has happened to you is one that can easily be conveyed to children and encourages them to be socially aware and take a role in making the world a better place. The main character of the book was a 12-year-old child, thus giving other children someone they can relate to.

Why should kids have all the fun? Shouldn't paying it forward be part of our everyday lives? Some people have a real gift with words, unlike me!

"People will forget what you said.
People will forget what you did.
But People will never forget how you made them feel."
Maya Angelou

Isn't that the truth? Good feelings stay with us forever!

This quote lead me on a quest to find out who is this woman with the wise words? If you are curious too, visit Dr. Maya Angelou's web site. It's not surprising to find out that she is a writer.

I found some more of her quotes:

How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!

If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded.

Love is that condition in the human spirit so profound that it allows me to survive, and better than that, to thrive with passion, compassion, and style.

One isn't necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can't be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.

Just imagine if everyone only said and did things that "Make People Feel Good" what a wonderful world this would be!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8527504563304165257.post-71536629263591762092007-02-28T20:44:00.000-08:002010-04-23T21:56:18.416-07:00Do The Right ThingI just found this site and thought it looks pretty interesting. Why not create your own free hugs campaign in your own community? It could be fun, think of all the hugs you'd give and receive.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8527504563304165257.post-5952428418604232842007-02-17T21:23:00.000-08:002007-02-17T22:30:28.677-08:00Some Nice Stories About Valentine KindnessHere are three stories I heard this past week about people doing nice things for others and thought you'd enjoy.

The first story is about a couple that have been together for 30 years and in all that time the husband has never given his wife a gift or even a card on Valentine's day. Over the years she has given him many cards and small gifts to express her affection for him, and this year was no different. He received a tiny box of heart shaped chocolates from her. What was different was that he thought of giving her a something and then he actually did it! The wife was surprised and delighted to receive a Valentines card and her favorite chocolates. I don't know if the husband fully realizes how much that small act touched his wife's heart.

My second story is about a young couple who are living apart as one of them is going to school. They only see each other every other weekend since it's a 3 hour drive between their homes. After work on Valentine's day he drove a total of 6 hours to personally deliver roses to her for Valentines day! He said being tired the next day was well worth it, and the young lady has never been happier. Wasn't that a nice thing to do?

My last story is about a family with puppies and a lonely elderly gentleman. The family was looking for good homes for their puppies so they hung posters up and told everyone they knew that they had puppies for sale. With in a few hours they had a phone call and one of the puppies had a nice new family. The next phone call was from the elderly gentleman, he came to see the puppies and as he held the smallest one it was obvious that they were a perfect match. The pup didn't squirm and wiggle as he usually did, he snuggled calmly in the man's arms. When the gentleman asked about the price, the family quoted a lower price than they originally wanted. The money didn't matter, rather they felt it was more important that the puppy had a good home and the lonely gentleman had a new friend.

We'd love to hear your stories and comments about someone doing something nice.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8527504563304165257.post-70463768044555100662007-02-14T13:52:00.000-08:002007-02-14T14:13:31.541-08:00Random Acts of KindnessAre you wondering what a random act of kindness is? According to Wikipedia:

A random act of kindness is a purportedly selfless act performed by someone to either help or cheer up a stranger, for no reason other than to make people happier. Either spontaneous or planned in advance, RAoKs are encouraged by various communities.
February 12-18, 2007 I also didn't realize that the second week of February is Random Act of Kindness week. Talk about good timing!

In the words of William Wordsworth, "The little unremembered acts of kindness and love are the best parts of a person's life."

And a quote from Charles Lamb, "The greatest pleasure I know is to do a good action by stealth, and to have it found out by accident."

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8527504563304165257.post-58261729924028833372007-02-14T11:42:00.000-08:002007-02-14T12:50:11.952-08:00Do You Believe?Do you believe that ordinary people can do extraordinary things? If you look, you may very well see people doing random acts of kindness all around you! However, if you aren't looking you might not notice them !

The purpose of this site is to highlight the goodness of mankind and the nice things people do, those random acts of kindness we might not see otherwise. Valentine's Day, the "day of love" seems to be a fitting day to start this blog.

Changing one thing for the better is worth more than proving a thousand things are wrong.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
